A Renovation Remedy For Your Kitchen’s Functional Deficiencies

Outdated countertops and antiquated paint schemes are common reasons families decide to remodel their kitchens. But unpleasing aesthetics aren’t the only inspiration for a kitchen renovation. In fact, many families are opting to renovate their kitchens because they’re fed up with the kitchen’s dysfunctional layout.

Such was the case for our clients Bill and Meg Bishop of Moultrie, Georgia.

Looking for a remedy to their kitchen’s functional deficiencies, the Bishops teamed up with Pool Brothers to transform their once frustrating space into a custom-designed kitchen that would meet the needs of their busy family.

The Bishop Home

The Bishop family trusted Pool Brothers designer Devin Ragan with creating a new kitchen layout that focused on the main functional areas of their kitchen.

The Bishops goals for their kitchen project included:

  • Designing a more functional kitchen layout

  • Removing an oversized refrigerator and creating a convenient location for a new one

  • Maximizing storage capabilities

  • Maintaining as much functional counter space as possible

  • Updating kitchen aesthetics with a blend of modern and traditional style features

Designing a More Functional Kitchen Space

From the beginning, it was clear that creating a functional and efficient space was the top priority for Bill and Meg.

“Once the Bishops told us what they were looking for, we evaluated their existing space and determined they needed a new kitchen layout to accommodate their needs,” said Devin. “Then we got busy creating a layout that would add more counter space, create more storage, and accommodate the relocation of their refrigerator. Basically, we reworked the main areas of their kitchen to make it a more functional space for their family to use daily.”

According to Devin, one of the top priorities for the homeowners was the location of their refrigerator.

“They had a very large refrigerator that was in an inconvenient location,” said Devin. “It was important that we find a way to relocate the fridge to another area of their kitchen. We decided to remove a small pantry area, which created a new space for the refrigerator,” said Devin.

The Pool Brothers team also installed new cabinets next to the new refrigerator space which created a place for the family’s coffee pot.

“This was another design feature that made the kitchen more functional for the family’s daily use,” said Devin.

Additionally, double ovens were removed and replaced with a new range, which fulfilled the homeowner’s desire of having more usable counter space.

The relocation of key appliances in the Bishop’s kitchen required that plumbing and electrical inner workings be rerouted, as well.

“Any time there are structural changes to an area we’re remodeling, especially if we’re relocating appliances or plumbing fixtures, it’s typical that plumbing and electrical components will need to be reconfigured. This can be a tricky process, especially if you don’t have the experience or forethought to plan for these types of changes, ” said Devin.

Devin added, “That’s why it’s so important to choose a company that focuses on kitchen and bathroom design and construction. At Pool Brothers, kitchens and bathrooms are our specialty, we know what to expect, and we have the resources in-house to ensure the entire job, including plumbing and electrical configurations, are performed correctly.”

Modern and Traditional Aesthetics

The aesthetics of the Bishop’s new kitchen needed to be a blend of modern and traditional to fit the overall personality of their house and to reflect the family’s style preference.

“After going to their house and chatting with them it was clear this wasn’t going to be the typical white on white kitchen,” said Devin.

The Cabinets and Hardware

The Bishops selected Aspect cabinets from Pool Brothers in Tundra white with a Lancaster door style, is a shaker door but with wider rails.

And though they went with white cabinets, a white backsplash, and white countertops, they opted for contrasting colors with their selection of dark floors and dark cabinet hardware.

“We also used an ash gray pull for all the doors and drawers which created a nice contrast for the white cabinets and added an interesting dimension,” said Devin.

The Countertops, Flooring, and Backsplash

Bill and Meg chose Calcutta Laza quartz with a 3" mitered edge for their countertops, which raised the overall counter up from the standard 36" height.

“Since the homeowners are fairly tall, raising the countertop height was a nice feature for them,” said Devin. “Additionally, the quartz material was a great option for this family because it gave them the look of marble without the maintenance that’s required for true marble material.”

For the backsplash, the Pool Brothers team installed 3” x 6” subway tiles on a straight pattern and ran the tile vertically.

“The interesting pattern gave a modern look to the otherwise traditional subway tile design,” said Devin. “We also used a textured tile that added dimension and interest to the space.”

For the flooring in their new kitchen, The Bishop family selected tile from Happy Floors ( Series: Iron, Color: Anthracite). The Pool Brothers flooring team installed the 12" x 24" tiles in a diagonal herringbone pattern to complete the look of the family’s new kitchen.
