Coastal-Inspired Kitchen Cabinets and Flooring in Chula, GA
When Darron and Candace Spikes began planning updates to their home in Chula, Georgia, they wanted a kitchen that felt more open, more functional, and better suited for everyday family life. They also wanted the design to reflect a light, coastal-inspired style while still feeling right at home in Southwest Georgia.
The project included new kitchen cabinetry, design updates in the family room, and new flooring throughout the home. As they began making selections, the Spikes family focused on creating a space with better organization, more storage, and a brighter, more welcoming look.
The family’s top priorities included:
A more functional kitchen layout
Custom cabinetry with organizational accessories
More storage throughout the kitchen
A coastal-inspired color palette
Durable flooring that flowed throughout the home
A finished space ready for holiday gatherings
Planning a More Functional Kitchen
One of the biggest goals for this Chula, Georgia, kitchen project was improving the layout. The original kitchen had two separate islands in an unusual configuration, which limited flow and made the space feel less practical for the family’s needs.
“The layout of the kitchen changed quite a bit,” said Devin Ragan, one of Pool Brothers’ in-house kitchen and bath designers. “We went from two separate islands in an unusual setup to a more open layout with one large island.”
The new island became the centerpiece of the kitchen, offering more usable workspace, better storage, and a more natural place for family and guests to gather.
During the planning process, the Pool Brothers team helped the homeowners think through the cabinetry layout, storage needs, appliance placement, and overall design style. For projects with major layout changes, it is also important for homeowners to work with qualified contractors and licensed trade professionals who can properly handle plumbing and electrical updates.

Custom Cabinetry Designed for Storage and Organization
Storage and organization were two of the most important priorities for the Spikes family. To achieve a clean, streamlined look, they selected Eclipse Cabinets, a European-style cabinet line known for its tight reveal and modern appearance.
The cabinetry plan included several custom organization features designed to make the kitchen more functional, including:
Pegboard storage in larger drawers
An appliance lift
A custom cookie sheet divider
Spice pullouts
Deep drawers for everyday kitchen items
Cabinet storage designed around the new island layout
These details helped create a kitchen that was not only beautiful but also easier to use day-to-day.
A Coastal-Inspired Cabinet and Countertop Palette
To bring the coastal-inspired design to life, the kitchen featured a light, airy color palette with navy accents on the island and hood. The navy added depth and contrast while still working as a timeless, versatile neutral.
“To keep with the coastal-inspired theme, we used light colors throughout the kitchen, with the exception of the color navy used for the island and the hood,” Devin said. “Navy is basically neutral these days, and it really added some great dimension to the space.”
The homeowners selected Calcutta Laza quartz countertops, which added a bright, polished look to the kitchen. The countertop edges were mitered to create a more substantial appearance and slightly raise the overall height, making the surface more comfortable for the homeowners.
Because of this design choice, the cabinet measurements had to be carefully planned to ensure the cooktop and drawer banks aligned with the finished countertop height.
A marble mosaic backsplash with a rough-cut face added texture, movement, and dimension to the kitchen while complementing the coastal-inspired cabinet and countertop selections.
Flooring That Flows Throughout the Home
In addition to the kitchen cabinetry, the Spikes family selected new flooring to carry the updated look throughout the home.
They chose a light-colored engineered hardwood floor that complemented the coastal-inspired design and helped brighten the overall space. In the foyer, the flooring was installed in a herringbone pattern to create a custom detail right at the home’s entrance.
The result was a cohesive look that connected the kitchen, family room, and main living areas.
